On March 3rd, Kent Center School’s Pre-School through eighth grade recognized the birthday of Theodore Giesel, the beloved author of Dr. Seuss stories. At the start of the day the entire student body gathered cross-legged on our gym floor.

We then enjoyed a reading of And To Think That I Saw It On Mulberry Street by our Principal, Ron Viafore. Next our reading specialist, Lee Sohl, led the group in a recitation of The Reader’s Oath, a poem by Debra Angstead, which celebrates reading!

Readers' Oath

(Written by Debra Angstead,
Missouri-NEA)

I promise to read
Each day and each night.
I know it's the key
To growing up right.
I'll read to myself,
I'll read to a crowd.
It makes no difference
If silent or loud.
I'll read at my desk,
At home and at school,
On my bean bag or bed,
By the fire or pool.
Each book that I read
Puts smarts in my head,
'Cause brains grow more thoughts
The more they are fed.
So I take this oath
To make reading my way
Of feeding my brain
What it needs every day.

This was followed by 6th through 8th grade boys and girls reading Dr. Seuss books to small groupings in each and every lower grade classroom. They did a terrific job involving the younger children and making the readings fun!

Many KCS students and teachers prepared for the event by wearing Dr. Seuss colors, “Cat in the Hat” hats, or dressing as favorite Dr. Seuss characters. Prior to this day students learned about the life and contributions of Dr. Seuss and studied what makes his work unique. Second graders drew and wrote about a favorite Dr. Seuss character in computer class. Work is displayed in the front hallway leading to the cafeteria. Third grade Spanish students even listened to Huevos Verdes con Jamón, (Green Eggs and Ham).

Mrs. Sohl and Miss Morrow, our new librarian, beautifully orchestrated this very special activity!

“We Do like green eggs and ham…Yes, we like them Sam I Am!”
