KCS second graders were extra busy during the month of March preparing for a special visit from local author Judi Barrett. They really enjoyed reading, discussing, and responding to the wonderful literature written by Ms. Barrett such as, Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs. The children worked on several projects during language arts, library, and art classes.
Their work was then used to decorate the Common Room for Judi Barrett’s visit. Student writing, art, and computer work brightened the hallways and walls.

Upon her arrival to Kent Center School, Ms. Barrett was escorted to the Common Room by a lucky second grader. She brought an umbrella to shield Ms. Barrett in case of a “food storm”.

Delicious food art hung from the ceiling to give the look of food falling from the sky.

Ms. Barrett shared several books, including her very first book written when she was just a child.
She also showed a large storyboard of Pickles to Pittsburgh: A Sequel to Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs. She explained the process of publishing a book and answered questions from each child. The children read and showed their written work to Ms. Barrett. She enjoyed hearing their unique ideas.

Everyone enjoyed fabulous treats from the “Falling Food Company” display created by second grader John and his family.

What a terrific day!
After this special event, second graders typed and illustrated thank you letters for Judi Barrett and all the people who helped to make the day possible. Ms. Barrett has since been in contact with the children by e-mail to express her thanks and they are delighted!
