Second Grade Visit to the Swift House

On April 1, 2003, KCS second graders visited the Swift House in Kent to learn about school long ago. During their walk, students enjoyed the sights and sounds. Upon their arrival at the Swift House, they were welcomed in to the building by the sound of the old school bell.

Marge McAvoy of the Kent Historical Society grouped the children according to the schoolhouse they would have attended long ago. The students learned facts about school in the early days and listened to funny stories recorded by local residents.

Photographs of the six local schoolhouses, games, and a feather pen were passed around for the children to see.

Ms. McAvoy answered questions from the group and then they browsed through displays of old books, journals, and photographs.

After the visit, students wrote and
illustrated thank you cards to show
what they remembered.
