ENROLLMENT: 291
I’d like to begin this last report of the 2009-2010 school year by thanking the entire Kent Center School family for your support and well wishes, as Ryan and I welcomed our new baby, River, into our home. He is truly a blessing!
May was indeed a busy month!
- Pre-K visited HVRHS’s VoAg center for a tour and a visit with the farm animals, and they also proudly signed up for library cards at the town library.
- Kindergarten and Grade 2 enjoyed a “3 Pigs” party in the library to honor students for entering a Big Bad Wolf poster contest.
- Grades 1 and 2 went to WestConn to see “Fantastic Mr. Fox,” a play based on Roald Dahl’s famous book.
- Grade 2 participated in a wonderful program on soil, decomposition, and how living organisms depend on soil for survival. Representatives from the Sharon Audubon held several classes in our greenhouse. The class then traveled to the Sharon Audubon and spent an afternoon searching for critters living in the soil.
- Third graders went to the Connecticut Museum of Mining and Mineral Science in Kent to coincide with their science unit on rocks and minerals. They also visited the Skiff Mountain Schoolhouse and learned what it was like to go to school in Kent in the late 1800s.
- Grade 4, under the direction of Family School Liaison Monica Rodriguez, participated in the Courage to Care Program. There were many lively activities and discussions leading to a better understanding of positive ways to interact.
- Grades 5 and 6 took their annual trip to New York City and visited the Metropolitan Museum of Art in connection with work in social studies and art.
- The middle school students also participated in a region-wide track meet, organized by Marci Perotti. This event is a way for the students in all of Region One’s schools to come together in friendly competition.
- Finally, Grades 7 and 8 participated in a substance abuse awareness program from High Watch and an HIV/AIDS presentation from Sharon Hospital/Waterbury Health Department. Both were well received.
Additional school highlights for the month of May that always receive rave reviews are:
- David Poirier’s music concert and Al Coffill’s art show. I thank both of them for their continuous hours of working with our students in fine arts.
- In addition, this year artsAlive welcomed Boogie Chillin’ to KCS. This program was designed to take participants through a musical journey of America’s rich music history. I was sent clips of the program and enjoyed watching faculty and students snap, clap, and move!
I would like to congratulate Debbie Morin, girls’ softball coach, and Vinnie Viscariello, boys’ baseball coach, on successful seasons. The girls’ finished in second place, while the boys placed third in the region.
Lastly, I would like to take this opportunity to thank Lenny Gulotta and Lee Sohl for their fine efforts as acting administrators during my leave. It brought me comfort in being away knowing that KCS was in such fine hands. I am truly grateful.
