ENROLLMENT: 289

Congratulations to Rima, Ryan, and River Ryan.  River was born on April 15th weighing 7 lbs., 3 oz.  All are doing well.

Grades 4, 5, and 6 went to the high school to visit author Pam Munroz Ryan.  Many pictures were taken.  Under the direction of Librarian Betsy Morrow and assistant Katie Moore, reports were that behavior was excellent.  Teachers were very proud of their students.

Under the direction of teacher Alicia Draper, a 5th grade Language Arts class presented Ms. Ryan with essays about the students’ favorite character in Esperanza Rising while supporting the characters with specific details.

Grade 3 traveled to Music Mountain in Falls Village.  The students were again very well behaved under the direction of teachers Adrienne McBrien and Susan Makarewich, and music teacher David Poirier.

Second grader Evan Kirkiles entered a contest sponsored by Perma-Bound Books “The Three Little Pigs”.  He was one of the national winners finishing 3rd out of over 1,000 students.  Because of his efforts, Evan won 16 books for himself and 16 books for the KCS library.  Miss Morrow was thrilled and enthusiastically accepted the new books. Evan was presented his certificate during our Special Recognition assembly.

Arbor Day, under the direction of art teacher Albert Coffill, third grade teacher Susan Makarewich, and librarian Betsy Morrow, was very exciting.  Ten trees – pear, apple, and peach – were donated by Mrs. Bennett from the Kent Greenhouse.  Mrs. Bennett has given 100 trees to the school over the past 10 years.

Sixth grade teacher Debbie Morin headed up the work on teacher schedules for next year (2010-2011) and was outstanding.

The eighth grade dance on April 26th raised $334.00.  This class has now reached their goal for their class trip to New York City.

Led by Mrs. Darlene Brady, her son Ben, and friends Gina Pequignot, Madeline Kabasakalian, and Kori Rimany, they raised $271 for shirts needed for the track meet.

Lily Bounival, Hazel Garrity, Mackenzie Meissner, Nicole You, and Trisha Worthington raised over $230 for Save the Whale campaign on Saturday, May 1.

Finally, on Thursday, April 29th at 7:00 pm., KCS Band Night 2010 began.  Due to the generosity of ArtsAlive , and under the direction of music teacher David Poirier, six artists were invited to share their skills with over 60 students from Kent Center.  For one hour, students were led by Deborah Cardinas, Kent School Instructor offFlute;  Theresa Dolak, Kent School instructor of clarinet;  Ken Nigro, UCONN instructor of saxophone;  Tom Krupa, Housatonic Valley band director, teaching trumpet;  David Gaedeke, North Canaan Elementary band director for trombone;  and Dave Wonsey, Kent School percussion instructor.  This is the second year in a row Band Night has been held for students in grades 4-8.

As of May 3, the girls’ softball, led by coach Debbie Morin, is undefeated and in first place.  The boys, led by Vincenza Viscariello, are 2 and 3.

The month of May promises to be more eventful than April!

Respectfully,

Leonard Gulotta, Jr.
