Kent Center School - Principal's Report
Kent Board of Education Meeting - April, 2010
Dr. Rima McGeehan
ENROLLMENT: 287 It is from home that I prepare this month’s principal’s report, due to my doctor’s recommendation to remain on bed rest for the remainder of my pregnancy. I thought that I may be able to work for one more month, but the doctor’s orders are in the best interest of me and the baby. Thank you for your continued support and kind words. I already miss being at KCS, but I am just an email or a phone call away. My plans are to remain connected! One tremendous highlight from the month of March was the region’s Grade 4 Arts Day, held annually at the Hotchkiss School. Several of our faculty members contributed to make this day a success, as the students participated in activities related to the visual arts, music, and dance. Feedback from the students was positive, and even the older students commented that they wished they were able to experience this event again. Another tradition here in Region One is the annual middle school Quiz Bowl. The game follows the same rules as the old television program known as the College Bowl. Each school competes once against every other school during the months of March and April. All of the students demonstrate terrific knowledge and sportsmanship. Thank you to Rachel D’Ambrosio for organizing the event here at KCS. Second graders had a visit from Ms. Sarah and Ms. Ellen from the Kent Memorial Library to share a presentation about the Underground Railroad and Kent’s role in helping slaves escape to freedom. They also visited the Swift House to meet Marge MacAvoy. The students learned about what schoolhouse they would have attended if they lived during the days of the one-room schoolhouse. They compared and contrasted what school life was like then and now. Thanks to Jenn Menniti and Ane Starr for their efforts in coordinating these two visits. I needed to miss KCS’s second annual Women in History Celebration, but the feedback I received about the “living museum” was extremely positive. Our energetic and creative staff and parents dressed as famous historical figures and presented to all grade levels. It was very meaningful for the students. I also needed to miss KCS’s annual student-faculty basketball game but want to thank everyone for their efforts in making this eighth grade fundraiser a success. The faculty came out winners of the game in the end, but I heard it was quite close! Congratulations to all participants! Lastly, I would like to congratulate Lenny Gulotta and several teacher coaches for another successful intramural basketball season. Students look forward to this time yearly, and it is a great opportunity to foster friendships while brushing up with basketball skills.
