Kent Center School - Principal's Report
Kent Board of Education Meeting - March, 2010
Dr. Rima McGeehan
ENROLLMENT: 286 In February, we started the month of with Jump Rope for Heart. Students raised over $2000 for the American Heart Association. Participation included 136 of 138 students! Thank you, Marci Perotti, for organizing this event. The following week, the Region One band and chorus completed their concerts, showcasing the unique talents throughout the district. We thank Sandra Kleisner and David Poirier for their efforts. A little snow did not stop Chocolate Festival goers, which took place on Thursday, February 11. People began coming before it started, and the line to get in was steady throughout the event. Students were treated to a day off from school on Friday, February 12, as teachers engaged in a professional development opportunity related to the use of AimsWeb software and effective tier one reading instruction. Pat Ciccone, Lee Sohl, and John Marsicano facilitated the workshops. The following week, kindergarten students were treated to a visit to the Morrison Gallery here in Kent, where they viewed and discussed artwork. Barbara Egenes, in collaboration with Al Coffill and Arts Alive, followed up with a kindergarten art project. They based their work on the author/illustrator Faith Ringgold, who is famous for story quilting. The Mother-Daughter basketball game was well attended, and I extend my congratulations to the girls’ team for their victory. It was a nice effort to increase cancer awareness, and I thank the several staff members who assisted with this event. Due to a snow day, our Read Aloud Day scheduled for February 26th, has been postponed to Friday, March 12th. Community members will come in to share stories with each classroom, and books were donated and dedicated to individual rooms. Thank you, Ane Starr, for organizing this event. MTs are off to a good start. Lee Sohl is doing a great job of acting as test coordinator. Students have been reminded about the importance of attendance, a good night’s sleep, a good breakfast, and best efforts. I am confident we will meet the high expectations of the test with success.
