Kent Center School - Principal's Report
Kent Board of Education Meeting - October 1, 2009

Dr. Rima McGeehan

ENROLLMENT: 282

Our Open House celebration started the year off on a great note! Students accompanied parents in classrooms for grades Pre-K through 4, while parents in grades 5 through 8 heard formal presentations regarding curriculum, homework policy, and study skills.

The seventh graders are at Nature’s Classroom this week. They are in Yarmouthport, Cape Cod, participating in an outdoor education curriculum. The staff that are chaperoning this trip include Scott Eldridge, Linda Miller, Debbie Morin, and Brian White.

Students in grades 3-8 participated in the viewing of President Obama’s Back-to-School speech. The president’s message about the importance of a good education and every individual making a positive contribution to the United States was well-received.

There have been inquiries about how Region One is preparing for the flu season. Mrs. Levesque has presented to the staff, and staff has encouraged students and parents to eat properly, get plenty of rest, drink plenty of water, wash your hands often, and stay home when you are sick.

School Goals for the year 2009-2010 have been established through the collaboration of myself and the staff. The two goals carrying over from last year fall nicely under our Response to Intervention umbrella:

Goal 1: Kent Center School will improve Connecticut Mastery Test scores by building on its strengths. Our objective is to perform in the top quarter of the DRG in all areas; reading, writing, math, and science.

Goal 2: Student learning will improve based on individual strengths and weaknesses. Our objective is to differentiate lessons to meet all students’ needs. We are continuing our study of Marzano’s work of increasing students’ vocabulary and background knowledge.
