Kent Center School - Principal's Report
Kent Board of Education Meeting - September 10, 2009

Dr. Rima McGeehan

ENROLLMENT: 285  (up 3 students from September 2008)

Students returned to school on Monday, August 31, seeming mellow, happy, and eager to learn. Everyone was smiling as I visited classes, and our First Day Celebration, including the dedication of our basketball court to Don Gowen, ended the day on a special note. The secretaries and custodians did an excellent job preparing for the new school year this summer, and many parents commented on their efforts.

Teachers attended two days of professional development at the high school before students joined us. The topic was RTI, or Response to Intervention. This process is a multi-step approach to providing services and interventions to all students as needed. Each step is closely monitored, and results are used to make decisions about further instruction or intervention that is needed for individual or small groups of students. This framework is our big umbrella for our school-wide goals this year, which include continued efforts for differentiation, increased background knowledge and understanding of vocabulary for students, and improvement of CMT scores.

We have much to celebrate in the area of Connecticut Mastery Test performance! Our scores have increased in the majority of grade level tests in reading, writing, and math. The staff and I will work together to analyze students’ areas of need and use their strengths to build on them.

There are seven new faculty members that we welcome to Kent Center School. They include:

  • Peggy Matthews, preschool teacher
  • Michelle Mott, grade 4 teacher
  • Monica Rodriguez, school-home liaison
  • Dianne Riddle, reading assistant
  • Traci Marshall, special education paraprofessional
  • Chea LaMedica, special education paraprofessional
