Kent Center School - Principal's Report
Kent Board of Education Meeting - March 30, 2009
Dr. Rima Zelvis
ENROLLMENT: 284 What a busy month March has been! The Connecticut Mastery Tests have been completed, and they have been returned to Central Office. Thank you, Lee Sohl, for your efforts in coordinating this. I am confident that KCS’s high expectations have contributed to a successful performance by our student body. ArtsAlive again hosted a visit from poet Davyne Verstandig as a follow-up to last year and a continuation of our school-wide poetry goal. This year, she worked with second and third graders with a focus on the elements of poetry, connecting reading and writing, and having students compose their own pieces of poetry. The most rewarding piece was that all of the students left feeling like writers! Grade 4 Arts Day, at the Hotchkiss School, was very successful! Sharon Hurlbutt, Al Coffill, and David Poirier coordinated efforts to expose students to learning about the visual and performing arts. The range of experiences offered to students, including drumming, dancing, puppetry, and more added to students’ background knowledge and cultural literacy. The student-faculty basketball game was also a big hit. It was an exhibition of skill, good sportsmanship, and laughter! Further, the spaghetti dinner raised over $2700, reaching the fundraising goal for eighth graders. Thank you to the eighth grade teachers and Fiona Malca for organizing this event. Baseball and softball tryouts have been completed, and the season is underway. Marci Perotti and Debbie Morin will work with the girls, and Vinnie Viscariello and Lenny Gulotta will work with the boys. Best of luck to both teams! Lenny Gulotta also coordinated efforts for the 5th and 6th grade intramural teams throughout the month of March. Thank you. For your planning, the graduation date for eighth graders has been set for Monday, June 15, 2009.
