Kent Board of Education Meeting - January 8, 2009

ENROLLMENT: 289 Happy New Year! The holiday break was a long one this year, and staff and students seem to have returned relaxed and rejuvenated. I have enjoyed hearing their stories about time they were able to spend with their families. One of Kent Center School’s highlights for the month of December was a terrific winter concert which put the audiences in the holiday spirit. Under the direction of David Poirier and Sandra Kleisner, performances were enjoyed by the Jazz Band, Senior Band, Intermediate Band, and the Chorus. We are all impressed with the many talents of our students. Stephen Langley, the Director of Outreach, at Mountainside in Canaan, presented to our seventh and eighth grade students, and the response was very positive. Steve began by providing the students with an overview of addiction and the habits and traits possessed by those who abuse alcohol and other substances. He also shared a DVD of various ranges of brain damage caused by substance abuse. He brought along two residents in treatment that presented their life stories related to decisions made when they were younger that resulted in addiction. As a follow-up to this presentation, Steve will be here for a Parent Forum on Tuesday, January 13th. I was able to join Abby Palmer and the student council on two holiday card delivery trips. We visited Templeton Farms and the Morningside Rest Home. The look on the residents’ faces and their appreciation of the students’ visit beautifully captured the holiday spirit. Finally, I would like to compliment Curt, Jim, Dave, and Larry for their efforts in keeping the school grounds clean and safe on snow days and delayed openings. We are grateful for their extra time, especially on weekends and holidays.
