This fall the seventh grade German class traveled to a private showing at Bantam Cinema to see their first German movie.
One of the highlights of the trip was traveling together on the
bus with students from Sharon Center School and finding that they could use many of the expressions learned in class to get
to know students from the other school.

Mostly Martha is the warm-hearted story of a chef in
Hamburg, Germany, whose control of every last detail works well in the kitchen, but not in her personal life. Students were excited to understand isolated phrases in German and to get a feel for the lives of the characters.

Many students commented on the similarities between life in Germany and in the USA. Some students seemed surprised to find more similarities than differences.

After the movie, students enjoyed a bag lunch at the local park provided by Hold the Pickle. Students played games after lunch to help them learn one another’s German names. On the way home, students discussed questions about the movie and told each other in German how they liked the various characters from the film.

All in all, it was a great opportunity for students to hear the language, learn about German culture, and to use the language themselves to communicate with people they had not known before the trip. Many thanks to Bantam Cinema for providing this experience!
