Kent Center School Scholarship Fund |
||||||||||||||||||
| History
of the Fund
The fund was established in 1961 when the Parent Teacher Organization of Kent Center School collected a few hundred dollars and “gave it to a graduate who needed help to go on to college.” A few years passed before the group was financially able to give additional scholarships. |

| Shortly after the fund was started, it received $1,400 in seed money from Dr. Josephine Evarts, a renowned physician who served Kent and the surrounding community for many years. The $1,400 was from a bequest from Mrs. Harry Mosher that had previously been given to the Kent Nursing Association for nursing education. | ||||||||||||||||||
| The
fund was eventually set up as a non-profit, with 501(c)(3) tax status from
the I.R.S. The fund’s mission, according to its bylaws, is “to
raise money for the purpose of awarding scholarships to needy and worthy
graduates of Kent Center School to assist them in obtaining education beyond
the secondary school level.” The fund is managed by an eleven to fifteen
member all volunteer Board of Directors who contribute their time.
In order to be eligible, students must have attended seventh and eighth grades at Kent Center School. Recipients may reapply for grants to provide support during each school year for a maximum of four years. “Post secondary” education can include two and four year college programs, as well as vocational and technical schools. The
Kent Center School Scholarship Fund celebrates its 41st anniversary/birthday
this year in 2002. As of 2002, 566 awards have been given for a total
of $542,800. |

Contributions
and Named Scholarships Contributions
have come from hundreds of individuals and businesses since 1961. Bequests
from estates and memorial gifts are a major source of support, as well
as contributions given in response to fundraisers and annual appeals.
The Scholarship Committee has raised money in the past with a variety
of different types of fundraisers. In recent years, The Scholarship Committee
has sponsored a booth at the Kent Firemen’s Fair. The annual Valentine’s
Chocolate Fest has grown yearly. Approximately $2,000 was raised the first
year in 1996 and in 2002 it topped $4,300. |
|||||||||||||||||
| Over
the years a number of “named scholarships” have been established,
requiring a contribution of $10,000 in one donation or collectively over
a period of years. As of 2002, the following named scholarships have been
established:
The J.H. Aiken Award |

As higher education costs have increased, the Board of Directors of the scholarship fund has worked hard to increase individual grants as well as the total amount of money in the fund. The funds awarded each year are a combination of recent contributions and the interest from the endowment fund. |
