November 2007 Report to KCS Board

Superintendent Patricia Chamberlain presented Peter Vermilyea with a gift for Teacher of the Year. Mr. Vermilyea’s Social Studies presentation covered topics of enrollment, curriculum, academic expectations, assessments, course offerings, staffing, short term challenges and long term trends.

The Board approved the new Social Studies courses Sociology (in place of Anthropology), Psychology, and Modern America.

Mr. Bayersdorfer Athletic Director’s Report highlighted the Housy teams wins and losses, the gift of a new scoreboard for basketball, the athletic budget and the need for an Athletic Trainer. Mr. Bayersdorfer noted the increase in head injuries associated with soccer, not only experienced by  Housy teams, but other high school teams.

Lauren Casey, Student Representative to the Board, reported on the National FFA Convention,  the Library Media Center resources, the music program, the School-to-Career program workshop, the Dodge Ball tournament, the pasta supper fund raiser for incoming Freshmen, and the cafeteria staff  support.

Mr. Hart reported that the Arboretum Committee will be planting three trees in 2008 and will continue their work on the senior courtyard. The next meeting will be held on January 23, 2008

Mrs. Halle reported that the Long Range Feasibility Committee will be working with Jonathan Costa Consultants to present Strategic Plans for HVRHS that will contain three phases. Board  members on the Long Range Feasibility Committee are Philip Hart and Stephanie O’Rourke. The Board voted unanimously to appropriate a $15,000 cap to be spent over two years to implement the plans of the Long Range Feasibility Committee.

Mr. Gaisford reported on the grade level (middle school/high school) meetings with teachers, the math program, the survey on professional development, the progress being made with the renovation of the Old Ag-Ed Building, and his ongoing work on NEAS&C recommendations.

Mr. Herrick reported that he has been working with the Art Garage Group to formalize a legal agreement on use of the building.

Mrs. Terry Special Education report included the schedule for the special education services provided to the area private schools.

The Board approved a field trip by the music department (Tom Krupa) to Virginia Beach, VA., April 10, 2008, to April 13, 2008.

The Board approved the new science course, Marine Biology (L. Garcia-Tripp).
