The Board received a presentation of the English programs by department chairperson Damon Osora. English is the only subject area that has a four-year graduation requirement. It includes a prescribed curriculum for students at four academic levels for Grades 9 – 11. Students in Grade 12 choose from a variety of electives to fulfill the English requirement including such courses as journalism, sports literature, detective fiction, science fiction, drama, film/media studies, women in literature, melting pot, creative writing, poetry, philosophy, and AP.
The Administration continues in its work toward identifying a vision for the Clark B. Wood building. Assistant Superintendent Thomas Gaisford and Science teacher Doug Weisman have been visiting science facilities at other schools including Glastonbury and Boston.
The Board voted to increase the science graduation requirement beginning with those in the Class of 2011 from 2 years to 3 years.
Dr. Foster reported that beginning next year $20/year will be collected from each student in the form of class dues to be used toward class events such as yearbook and prom.
The Board voted to officially close the Capital Maintenance Project, approved by voters in December 2003. This project broadly included window replacement, renovation of the administrative offices, asbestos abatement, and rubberizing the athletic tract.
