The Board received a presentation of the Applied Education program by department chair Paul Padua. Applied Education includes business education, cooperative work experience, family and consumer science, school to careers and technology education. Course titles include accounting, communications, money management, yearbook design, B&W photo, advanced photo, metal technology, wood technology, drafting & electronic publishing, production graphics, power technology, auto technology, child development, family meals, home economics, interior design, north American cuisine, cooperative work experience and the CNA program.
Science teacher David Lindsay announced his retirement at the end of this school year after 40 years of service to the students of Housatonic Valley Regional High School (HVRHS).
There is continued discussion regarding the implementation of class dues at HVRHS. A polling of students indicated that they thought $20/year would be an appropriate amount.
The HVRHS website was featured in January by “ConneCT Kids” http://www.kids.state.ct.us/featured.htm, a link of the State of Connecticut website. As stated on the website “Sites are not selected on the basis of artistic or technical merit, and selection does not indicate a preference on the part of ConneCT Kids for the format or content of these websites over those websites that have not yet been selected.”
The Board received the first DRAFT budget for Region 1 with an increase of 6.98% or $879,046, broken down as follows:
HVRHS 3.04% increase ($232.082)
Pupil Services 15.14% increase ($622,407)
RSSC 2.93% increase ($24,557)
The Board asked the administration to consider the following budget cuts: HVRHS 1%, RSSC 1% and Pupil Services 2%.

The Board met for several hours to discuss the DRAFT budget, focusing on possible budget reductions and the impact of the shift in enrollment.

February 22 @ 5pm: RSD No. 1 Budget Workshop
March 11 – 14: NEAS&C visit to HVRHS
