After a year of communicating, 5th and 6th grade students had a chance
to meet the author of Emilio, Julia Mercedes Castilla. Students read
her book about a boy from El Salvador in their 5th grade Spanish class.
They participated in literature circles to discuss the book. Although
the book was in English, there were many Spanish words and many references
to the El Salvadorian culture. |

In May
2002 we were lucky enough to have Ms. Castilla visit our school and
speak with all
4 classes. To prepare for her visit, 5th graders designed murals on
the walls of the library
to represent different scenes in the book. The students had a chance
to ask questions about her life, how she became a writer, and her
book. After Ms. Castilla candidly answered their questions she read
the first chapter of one of her other books, "Pirinolo".
