KidCritS Review by Nora, Grade 4

Follow that Mom
by Mary Riskind

I chose Follow That Mom because it looked funny from the cover. It WAS funny! I thought it was funny because a mom was falling out of a boat and a girl was laughing. My mom would yell at me unless she, too, thought it was funny!

The main character is Maxine Goode who always causes trouble for herself and her family. Her best friend is Bonnie. Bonnie always helps Maxine out with her problems.

I thought the funniest thing in the book was when Maxine yelled, "WAKE UP" really loud and then said, "Heh, heh. My foot fell asleep." Maxine was supposed to be telling her mom to wake up, but Maxine went overboard. Bonnie told Maxine to be loud because her mom does not like loud noises. Maxine did that to get her mom out of Girl Scouts.

Maxine's mom goes to Girl Scouts to help out, and Maxine wants her to leave. On the way to a field trip for Girl Scouts, Maxine and the scouts sing Girl Scout songs at the top of their lungs. Maxine's mom hates singing in the car so when they got out she was all woozy! That is why Maxine screamed, "Wake Up" to her mom.

The author treated the book funny. It was funny not only because of the Girl Scout pranks but other things too. For instance, Maxine and Bonnie play lots of tricks together on Maxine's sister Karen. But, most of them get Maxine in trouble.

I love funny books and I definitely want to read more of the author's books. Maxine is a very funny girl, and I hope there are girls (or people) like her in other books of Mary Riskind.
