     Third Grade Weaving

The third grade students are currently involved in a Social Studies unit on the Native Americans of the southwest. While studying the Navajo, they learned that this tribe raised goats and sheep and had very accomplished weaving skills. After reading The Goat in the Rug and discovering the steps of weaving, the children had the opportunity to learn how to weave using a shoebox as a loom. This was an exciting project and the students were quite amazed by their finished projects.

Three area weavers came to demonstrate various weaving techniques. Mrs. Tara Goodman, Mrs. Kari Morales and Mrs. Jody Hyman brought in their spinning wheels and a Navajo spinner to demonstrate the method for of spinning wool into yarn.

The students had the opportunity to work in pairs to spin using a hooked stick to twist the fibers. They drafted their ball of wool into a finished piece of yarn, which they then took home.
