Kent Memorial Librarians Ms. Ellen Paul and Ms. Sarah Marshall came to visit Kent Center School Second Graders to teach them about Kent’s history as part of the slave’s journey for freedom on The Underground Railroad.
Ms. Paul introduced students to slavery with information presented through a power-point presentation. The students reviewed who slaves were, what they did and where they lived. She shared pictures of route maps so the students could see the various journeys the slaves took on the Underground Railroad in search of freedom. The students were able to see pictures of houses in our areas that were safe houses for slaves. Ms. Paul explained to students the harshness of the conditions the slaves lived in and the danger they were in when “vanishing” from their plantations.
Ms. Marshall followed up with a story entitled Henry’s Freedom Box: A True Story from the Underground Railroad written by Ellen Levine and illustrated by Kadir Nelson. The students loved listening to the emotional story and enjoyed viewing the beautiful illustrations.
We followed up with a Reading Rainbow video of the book Follow the Drinking Gourd written and illustrated by Jeanette Winter.
Thank you Ms. Ellen and Ms. Sarah for coming to do this presentation at our school! We learned a lot!
