Second graders have been studying nutrition in science. They learned about making healthy choices by learning about the food pyramid. Students were given the task of being a kindergarten teacher for a day. They were asked to create a book that they would use to teach the kindergarten children about the 5 food groups, eating a balanced diet, and being physically active.

The lessons focused around the design of the food pyramid. Students drew food for each food group and placed them on a giant food pyramid that was used to show the kindergarten students what foods make a healthy choice.

Students in kindergarten and second grade buddied up to learn about nutrition. Some of the kindergarten comments included:
“Wow! That was cool.”
“I guess I should only eat one donut a day.”
“I didn’t know playing was exercise.”
“I think chocolate stuff should be a food group.”

Second graders finished their time as teachers to the kindergarten students but still had lots to learn. We took a trip to the local grocery store, Davis IGA, to learn where to find foods in the grocery store and how they fit into the food pyramid. We met the Green Grocer in the produce isle of the IGA to learn where to find fresh fruits and vegetables. Students continued on a tour of the store locating foods from all the food groups. Their final task was to complete a scavenger hunt. Children were divided into groups and asked to find grains, fruit, vegetables, milk, and beans throughout the store.
