KCS second graders celebrated the arrival of spring by planting vegetables and dwarf sunflowers in their very own greenhouse.
Megan and Tom of Marble Valley Farm visited KCS to
help second graders with this process.
Second graders were given the choice of 3 dwarf sunflowers that they could plant. The choices were: Sundance Kid, Teddy Bear, and Pacino Gold.
They also each planted a vegetable. Those choices were: heirloom or cherry tomatoes, Connecticut Field or Wee-B-Little pumpkins, magda or zephyr zucchini, or red or green lettuce. Pumpkins and Sundance Kid Sunflowers were the most popular.
Students were surprised by how quickly the planting went.
They followed these simple steps:
choose your vegetable;
fill the pot with soil;
place the seeds on top of the leveled soil;
gently push the seeds into the soil;
water;
WAIT!
After only a week, we went to check on the plants and found that the sunflowers had sprouted.
Second graders will continue to check on their plants each week. We will water them and chart their growth.
At the end of school , students will take their plants home and watch them grow over the summer!
