Students enjoyed a beautiful day for a walk to the Swift House located on Route 341 in Kent. The Swift House is owned by the Kent Historical Society. The students were greeted by the sound of an old school bell and Marge McAvoy, director of the Kent Historical Society. |

When the children arrived, they were divided into groups based on which schoolhouse they would have attended. They enjoyed many stories about the one-room schoolhouses based on Ms. McAvoy’s research. Children also learned about the different games played
long ago.

Marge McAvoy explained to the second graders that the town was divided into school districts long before we became a region. Each district was assigned a one-room schoolhouse. Where a student lived in the town determined which schoolhouse he/she would attend. Children of all ages attended class together in a one-room schoolhouse. |

Ms. Anderson, of Kent Hollow, told the children stories about when she attended the Kent Hollow schoolhouse as a young girl. |

We all agreed that life back then was much different from life in the year 2008. |
