On Friday, April 4, 2008, KCS second graders enjoyed a very special visit from local children’s author Judi Barrett. They were so excited to meet a published author!

Prior to Ms. Barrett’s visit, second graders prepared in a variety of ways. They read and discussed many of Ms. Barrett’s books during language arts and library classes. Literature circle jobs provided the opportunity for students to respond to the book selections by asking questions, making connections, building vocabulary, and
illustrating ideas. |

|
Each second grade class created beautiful tablecloths related to Ms. Barrett’s books. During art class, Mr. Coffill guided the students as they created huge pieces
of food. |

For Judi Barrett’s visit, the library was decorated to resemble Chewandswallow,
a town from the author’s famous book Cloudy With
a Chance of Meatballs and Pickles to Pittsburgh: A Sequel to Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs. Two huge carrots and a welcome sign provided a magical entryway. The children were delighted to see their tablecloths and giant food art hanging from the ceiling! |

The students were then introduced to Judi Barrett. They listened with excitement as Ms. Barrett shared her experiences as an author and read aloud from several of her books. She also explained how a book is published and showed examples of galleys. The children asked Ms. Barrett questions and read her the poems they had written. Then they presented Ms. Barrett with a book they created. The book was entitled Never Forget to Read a Judi Barrett Book. Each child wrote and illustrated a page. |

The second graders also had the opportunity to work on activity mats
provided by Ms. Barrett.

The event ended with a delicious picnic lunch. The children thanked Ms. Barrett and later wrote about their experience. In computer class, the students typed and illustrated thank you letters to all the people who helped make the day a success.
