On February 28, 2008 Mrs. Makarewich’s third grade and Mrs. Darby’s fifth grade math students joined together for a class period to solve challenging word problems.  At the start of the lesson, the children were taught the Attack Method.  The steps for this strategy are to first understand the problem, next plan how the problem can be solved, then compute to solve and finally check the answer to make sure it makes sense.

The students were placed into small groups and were given problems to
solve cooperatively.

At the end our session, the answers to the problems were discussed, the steps for attacking word problems were reviewed and the students’
questions were answered.

The following are some of the comments the children made
during this cooperative session:

“I feel better organized about how to attack word problems.”

“My fifth grade partners had some great strategies for figuring out what
to do when they’re stuck.”

“Reading a problem carefully and underlining key words really helps.”

“Good thing we checked our answer, because we had forgotten a
part of the directions.”

The students decided that they are now ready to be sharks as they attack the math components of their CMTs.
