Second graders have been studying nutrition in science.  They have learned about the food pyramid, eating a balanced diet, the 5 food groups, and what it means to be physically active.  Students were given the task of being the kindergarten teacher for a day.  To help teach the kindergarteners, second graders created their own nutrition book.

It consisted of 5 pages.

Page 1:  Students began by creating a title and illustrations for their cover.

Page 2:  Next, they wrote three sentences about what it means to be healthy. Student examples include: “ To be healthy it is always important to eat healthy things and not a
lot of junk food.”  “You should be physically active for 60 minutes each day.” To have
a balanced diet you have to eat foods out of all 5 food groups.”

Page 3:  Then, students drew and labeled 3 foods for each of the 5 food groups
(grains, vegetables, fruits, milk, and meat and beans).

Page 4:  Next, students created a balanced meal on a plate including a drink.

Page 5: Finally, children illustrated three physical activities they like to do and 2
sentences describing why it is important to be active.

Some examples include: “Exercise is important because it helps to maintain a good
body weight.” “You should be physically active for 60 minutes each day.”

Then came the fun part!  Second graders paired up with the kindergartens to teach
them what they learned about nutrition using their wonderful books.

Some of the comments to the second grade teachers from their kindergarten students included, “Second graders told us to eat healthy food”,

“I liked when they showed us to exercise.”,  “ I liked learning about fruit.”

“My sister knows a lot of stuff about good nutrition.”

“You shouldn’t eat a lot of candy. It is bad for your teeth, you know.”

“If we eat healthy food, we will grow big and strong.”

This year’s second graders were the first class to take a field trip to the Davis IGA to learn about nutrition.  The trip began with a tour of the store. Students learned about fresh fruits and vegetables, large coolers in the back of the store, and how hamburger is made.
The field trip concluded with a scavenger hunt where the students worked in pairs to
find items from the different food groups.
