For at least 40 years, Kindergarten students at Kent Center School have been making handprints out of plaster of Paris.  Kindergarten teacher
Marion Sleighter started the tradition and passed it on to Terese Abbott. Now Mrs. Robey and Mrs. Vega are keeping the tradition alive.

The children start by taking an orange-sized ball of DAP (a molding compound), patting it flat with the heel of their hand, and smoothing it out so that there are not any marks in the DAP.

Next, the children press their hand into the  DAP to make a mold of their handprint.  The teachers help the students to make a good impression in the DAP.

The children help to mix the plaster of Paris.  The mixture needs to be stirred carefully so that there are no bubbles.  Mrs. Robey and Mrs. Vega pour the mixture into each mold.

When the mold hardens slightly, names and dates are carved into the back.  Once the mold is completely dry, the DAP is removed and the children can see their handprints.

Many families have these special handprints at their homes, some hidden on mantels, others hanging on walls.  Some years they were even spray painted with gold paint.  The teachers hope that this year’s students and families will treasure these mementos
of Kindergarten for many years to come!
