On Friday, October 19, 2007, Mrs. Makarewich’s third grade math class traveled to the kindergarten to practice their measuring skills with Mrs. Vega’s and
Mrs. Robey’s students.

The third graders have been learning about measuring in inches.   For a homework assignment they each measured an adult’s height and arm span (the distance from finger tip to finger tip of arms that are outstretched).  When the children compared their two measurements, they noticed that their numbers were about equal to each other.  This was such an amazing discovery that the decision was made to test this newfound knowledge by measuring the kindergarten students.  The kindergarteners were also learning about measuring so the timing of this project was perfect!

Each third grader was paired with at least one kindergarten student.
They then measured their partner’s height and arm span.

After allowing the kindergarteners some time to measure various objects in the classroom, everyone gathered together and talked about the height and arm span measurements they had recorded.  Interestingly, the numbers were also about equal to each other!  The children stated that they will remember this concept for a long time to come and that practicing together was an exciting activity.
