     Our Visit to Gettysburg

The battle of Gettysburg was the Civil War’s bloodiest battle.  Over a course of 3 days, 51,000 soldiers lost their lives.  During our visit, we had a chance to visit the parks and museums that now tell the story of this battle.

Our first stop was to the Visitors’ Center of Gettysburg.  We explored this museum from top to bottom looking at the different elements of the battle and reading the stories of the soldiers that fought there.

From there we walked over to the Gettysburg Cyclorama.  Here the students had an opportunity to experience soldier life with the a little help from our guide.  Students were challenged to complete the nine steps to loading a rifle, asked to wear the woolen uniform of a Union soldier, and enlisted into the Kent Regulars to re-enact a battle between the Confederate and Union Army.

Our visit continued with a guided bus tour where students learned the details of the 3 days of battle.  One of our stops allowed us to explore Devil’s Den.  This rocky hill provided protection for the Union soldiers on the 3rd day of battle.

We took home with us an appreciation for how important yet awful this battle really was in our history.
