Mrs. Makarewich’s third grade science students have been learning about rocks and minerals this spring.  It is an exciting unit that includes performing experiments to discover how sedimentary, igneous and metamorphic rocks are formed.

Each child also brought in a rock that they particularly wanted to study.  The children have been keeping a journal in which they are recording their observations.  Their descriptions include color and weight as well as specific characteristics such as whether their rock sinks or floats.  Using magnifying lenses to find some of these details has been especially exciting.

A special part of this unit was a trip to the Connecticut Museum of
Mining and Mineral Science in Kent.

Mr. Pawloski, retired earth science teacher, geologist, director of the museum and author of Connecticut Mining, presented a workshop on rocks and minerals. He talked about the history of mining and the various kinds of rocks that can be found
in Connecticut.

Of particular interest were the fluorescent rocks that glowed under blue lights, the hands-on demonstrations, the trip into the mine and the rock crusher.  Each child had the opportunity to crush a marble rock and bring their sample home.  Mr. Pawloski even cracked open a geode so the students could see the crystals inside.

This has been an exciting unit of study and everyone is looking forward to adding to
their rock collections over the summer.
