Second Graders Love The Food Pyramid

Second graders have been studying nutrition in science.  They have learned about the food pyramid, eating a balanced diet, the five food groups, and what it means to be physically active.  Students were given the task of being the kindergarten teacher for a day.  To help teach the kindergarteners, second graders created their own nutrition book.

Each book consisted of five pages

Students began by creating a title and illustrations for their cover.

Next, they wrote three sentences about what it means to be healthy. Student examples include: “To be healthy it is always important to eat healthy things and not a lot of junk food.”  “You should be physically active for 60 minutes each day.” To have a balanced diet you have to eat foods out of all five food groups.”

Then, students drew and labeled three foods for each of the five food groups (grains, vegetables, fruits, milk, and meat and beans).

Next, students created a balanced meal on a plate including a drink.

Finally, children illustrated three physical activities they like to do and wrote two sentences describing why it is important to be active.

Some examples include: “Exercise is important because it makes your blood pump.” “If you are physically active you can do lots of things like roller skating, biking, and swimming.”

Then came the fun part!  Second graders buddied up with the kindergarteners to teach them what they learned about nutrition using their wonderful books.

“Eat healthy.”

“Play soccer, play hockey, play football, play basketball, and do exercise.”

“Eat good food. You need to eat healthy stuff.”

“You need to eat a lot of food to be strong.”
