Welcome to Chewandswallow
at
Kent Center School!

On Friday, April 14, 2006, KCS second graders enjoyed a very special visit from
local author Judi Barrett. They were so
excited to meet a published author!

Prior to Ms. Barrett’s visit, second graders prepared in a variety of ways. They read and discussed many of Ms. Barrett’s books during language arts and library classes. Literature circle jobs provided the opportunity for students to respond to the book selections by asking questions, making connections, building vocabulary, and illustrating ideas. Students showed good cooperation during group discussion and sharing time.

Each second grade class created beautiful tablecloths related to Ms. Barrett’s books. During art class, Mr. Coffill guided the students as they created huge pieces of food.

For Judi Barrett’s visit, the library was decorated to resemble Chewandswallow, a town from the author’s famous books, Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs and Pickles to Pittsburgh: A Sequel to Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs. Two huge carrots and a welcome sign provided a magical entryway. The children were delighted to see their beautiful tablecloths and giant food art hanging from the ceiling.

Once seated in the silo, the group was introduced to Judi Barrett. The children listened with excitement as Ms. Barrett shared her experiences as an author and read aloud several of her books. She explained how a book is published and showed examples of galleys and rough sketches.     Pic 5

The children asked questions and read aloud their written work. The children presented Ms. Barrett with a beautiful quilt they created. Each square on the quilt told a fact about Judi Barrett and was colorfully illustrated.

Second graders had their photographs taken with Ms. Barrett as she presented a special autographed bookmark to each child.

Our special event ended with a delicious picnic lunch. The children thanked Ms. Barrett and later wrote about their experience. In computer class, students typed and illustrated thank you letters to all the people who helped make the day a success.
