Mrs. Makarewich’s third grade students spent several weeks on a writing project that involved describing the steps that a person would follow when creating a traditional snowman. To help the children picture these steps, they first practiced building snowmen outdoors.

Next they took their hands-on-experiences and wrote their first draft. The sequence words first, next, afterthat, then, and finally helped the children organize their thoughts.
After many sessions of conferencing, editing, and testing out their instructions, they were ready to write their final copy.

To celebrate all their hard work, the students invited their parents to come to class. Everyone was paired up and, as the directions were read aloud, the parents followed along and built a snowman by using clay as pretend snow.

Everyone had a great time and the snowmen looked terrific!

Mrs. Menniti’s students even came in to join in
the fun!
