2nd Graders Visit the Swift House

Second graders have been studying about life long ago in Social Studies. Each year we visit the Swift House to learn about one-room schoolhouses.

Students enjoyed a crisp walk to the Swift House located on Route 341 in Kent. They were greeted by the sounds of an antique school bell.

Marge McAvoy, president of the Kent Historical Society, explained that Kent was divided into school districts long before we became a region. Each district was assigned a one-room schoolhouse. Where a student lived determined which school students would attend. Children of all ages attended class together in a one-room schoolhouse.

The schools were called The Man’s School in the winter and The Woman’s School in the summer. Men needed to bring in wood and tend to the fire so they taught school in the winter.

Children were surprised to learn that teachers only earned $16.00 a month.

Another story told by Mrs. McAvoy involved two brothers who went to the same schoolhouse. The grandfather clock in the class did not have a glass cover. Each time the teacher was not looking, the brothers would move the clock hands ahead so they got out of school by 1:00 that afternoon.
