At the beginning of second grade, the students enjoyed an interesting science unit involving the study of trees. They participated in a variety of activities including outdoor exploration, experiments, and examining tree parts. On October 21, 2004, parent helpers joined students and teachers for a special project that connected science concepts to art class by creating beautiful animal leaf art. In order to prepare for this activity, students gathered a wide variety of autumn leaves, grasses, flowers, and flat tree parts. They used simple field guides to identify different types of leaves and then they pressed these items for several days and brought them to school.

During art class, the children demonstrated concentration and creativity as they made their art into the image of chosen animals. The book Look What I Did with a Leaf by Morteza E. Sohl provided several examples of how to layer leaves, use contrasting colors, and add details to leaf artwork. Adult helpers guided students as they searched for different types of leaves to use for their project. The finished artwork was beautiful!
