The 8th Grade Literature Class does Independent Reading Projects

The Literature class began the first quarter by reading a book together. Most of the novel was read in class and discussed with the whole group. The reading plan for the second quarter was different. The students were able to choose novels to read on their own. Except for three girls who read the same novel, everyone chose a different book.

Although the novels were varied, Mrs. Sohl gave the same reading project to all the students. Their assignment was to pretend to be a salesperson trying to sell eighth grade teachers (the other students in the class) their book. They had to support their sales pitch with a book review, skit, book cover, game or PowerPoint presentation to help convince the "teachers" that their book was worth purchasing. The “teachers”, in turn, filled out evaluation sheets on each presenter. The evaluation required decisions about whether the content, interest level and reading level were appropriate for eighth grade, and if they planned to “buy” the book for their class.

Three eighth graders read Granny Torrelli Makes Soup, by Sharon Creech. Although all three students enjoyed the book, the “teachers” felt that it was too easy for their grade level.

This student-created book cover for The Million Dollar Shot, by author Dan Gutman, helped the audience focus on the presentation.

One eighth grader introduced himself as “a representative from the House of Books” and ably answered many questions about The City of Ember, by Jeanne DuPrau.

This game board was produced to spark interest in the book My Secret War, by Mary Pope Osborne.
