2nd Graders Welcome Author Judi Barrett

KCS second graders were very excited to meet the talented author Judi Barrett. They prepared for her visit by reading many of her wonderful books and responding to the literature through discussions, writing, and beautiful art work.

The newly renovated library was then decorated to resemble the town of ChewandSwallow from Ms. Barrett’s famous book Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs.

The food was literally “falling”
from the sky!

When the special day arrived, two lucky
children escorted Ms. Barrett to the library.

The adventure continued as the children entered the library to finally meet Judi Barrett. They listened attentively as Ms. Barrett shared her experience as an author and read two of her books. The children asked Ms. Barrett questions about her life and shared some of their written work. Judi explained how a book becomes published and showed examples from each step in the process.

Mrs. Ferris, the KCS PTO President, then presented Ms. Barrett with a thank you for her donation of a brick for the KCS courtyard walkway.

Next, the children read a Judi Barrett biography that they had created and “published” with the help of Miss Morrow. Each child read aloud the page that he/she wrote and illustrated.

Ms. Barrett enjoyed all the work that second graders accomplished and presented special gifts to them. Each child received an activity placemat of Pickles to Pittsburgh and an autographed bookmark from Ms. Barrett.

Parent volunteers were very helpful as they took wonderful photographs of each child with Judi Barrett and caught many precious moments.

In addition, they laminated
the bookmarks and
added beaded yarn.

Lunch time was spent outside on the lawn under a blue, sunny sky and nobody spotted any mashed potatoes!

The children followed up the big event with thoughtful thank you letters to all involved in making this important day possible. Once again, it was a great success and the children will carry fond memories.
