     The KCS Inventor's Fair 2004

   

 



The Connecticut Invention Convention was held Saturday, May 1st at UCONN, Storrs. In the tradition of the past twelve years (missed last year due to construction issues), Kent Center School sent inventors to compete at the state level. The invention process at KCS was open to all interested students in grades 1 through 8. Four winners from our school’s Inventors’ Fair attended the state convention and KCS is very proud that “The Fruit Necklace” was a winner at the state level!
   
       
 
             
Each inventor received five invention activity pages over a month and a half. They were completed and returned to Mrs. Sohl, the Connecticut Invention Convention sponsoring teacher. She responded with comments, questions, and suggestions. These activities helped the inventors keep pace in the process from idea to actual invention, and provided an avenue of communication between the students and Mrs. Sohl. The activities helped serve as a structure for the required Inventor’s Log, too.
 
     
 
           
  Although many students showed interest and began the process, a dozen children actually followed through and created inventions. Not only did they do an excellent job building their models, but all twelve explained their inventions beautifully, whether speaking to kindergartners, seventh graders or adults!
   
 
   
Participation was optional. All students who created a working invention to be on view at KCS’s Inventors’ Fair on Tuesday, March 30th, received extra credit in science for the third marking period. These inventions had to be the product of a single inventor and were be judged according to grade level. CT Invention Convention rules state that parents can ONLY support their child by helping him or her gather materials, helping with specific tools, explaining concepts (such as wiring or circuits), and transporting the child to locate materials. They could also help their first or second grade student with the writing or typing for the Inventor’s Log.
