8th Grade Study Skills Plus Creates Masks

Mrs. Sohl’s 8th grade Study Skills Plus class had an assignment. It was to create masks for the school-wide mask project using an Australian theme, including dot design similar to those seen in Aboriginal paintings.

The first step was researching Australia using the Internet, encyclopedias and books. The students took notes on the character, style or animal on which they would base their mask. Then they wrote a paragraph describing what they had learned. Next, the eighth graders drew a rough draft of their mask. They used the draft to plan their designs and colors.

Next, each student received a cardboard mask shell that would serve as a base for their mask. They cut eye holes and got a better feeling of how the mask would look when finished.

The last part of the assignment was to create a 3-D mask based on some aspect of Australia to put on display in school. The shells were layered with colored tissue using paper mache. Some eighth graders built off of the initial shape and created alligator mouths and bird beaks. Others added feathers or beads. Fine details, as well as the traditional dots of Aboriginal art, were added with paint.

The final product was colorful and impressive! They were hung around the school and many appeared in the KCS Spring Art Show. The culmination of the school-wide mask project was when all the students, preschool through eighth grade, marched into the center of town displaying their masks.
