Second Grade Visits the Swift House

It was a rainy Wednesday morning. Second graders loaded the bus for an exciting trip to the Swift House located on Route 341 East in Kent to learn about one room schoolhouses. They arrived to hear the sound of a large bell ringing. Class had begun. Marge McAvoy, director of the Kent Historical Society, welcomed the students into the Swift House.

Second graders sat in a circle with other students that would have gone to the same one room schoolhouse. They listened to stories about the thirteen schoolhouses that are part of Kent’s history. Ms. Constance Anderson and Ms. Charlotte Lindsey joined Ms. McAvoy in telling stories and answering student generated questions.

The children also enjoyed looking at old pictures of the schoolhouses and learning where they are located. Back at school, second graders reflected on their experience through writing, drawing, and sharing. They wrote thank you letters and look forward to visiting the Skiff Mountain Schoolhouse in third grade.
