     Mrs. Vega's Kindergarten Mummy Math

One of our objectives is to work on measuring using non-standard measurements.

During one math class we wrapped a child's arm in toilet paper to see how many pieces of toilet paper it would take.

We used 8!

The children counted the individual pieces of toilet paper.

The children then had to estimate how many
pieces it would take to wrap their whole body like a mummy or a caterpillar's cocoon. We wrote down all of the estimates and then set off to work.

The children were grouped in fours with each child having a different job: the caterpillar (this child was wrapped), the wrapper, the measurer (this child unwrapped the caterpillar and counted all of the sheets of toilet paper), and the recorder (this child reported back to one of the teachers what the final total was).

We recorded the actual number of pieces of toilet paper it took to wrap each child on the original chart next to their estimate. This was a fun activity for all and the students had a chance to count to some very big numbers. We also had a chance to talk about estimating!
